This January, we invite you to celebrate Mentoring Month!
Did you know that youth with mentors are more likely to pursue healthy lifestyles as adults? With exercise and healthier choices being the most common New Year’s Resolutions for adults, January is an ideal time to learn about the benefits of mentoring and to give back as a volunteer.
According to Boston Consulting Group research, mentoring has a clear, positive effect on a young person’s life trajectory.
- 92% of Big Brothers Big Sisters alumni feel more confident
- 80% go on to pursue healthy lifestyles
- 81% report stronger financial literacy
Mentoring is a critical factor enabling young people to achieve more – no matter what adversities they face. In fact, Harvard research shows that every single child who does well despite hardship has a stable relationship with a supportive adult.
With one in five Canadian children living in poverty, and approximately 1.2 million youth affected by mental health concerns, the need for a mentor is greater than ever. While mentors across the gender spectrum are needed, the demand for male volunteers is especially high. Volunteering for only one hour a week can change the course of a young life.
During Mentoring Month, we encourage you to join the conversation about the impact of mentoring and to consider volunteering in your community.
Mentoring Month Dates
- January 4th – I Am A Mentor Day (#IAmAMentor). If you are a mentor, tell us what makes your mentoring relationship special and tag us (@BBBSC) on social media.
- January 17th – International Mentoring Day (#MentorDay). Share a mentoring moment or share how mentoring contributes to a better world while joining an international conversation on social media.
- January 31st – #ThankYourMentor Day. Show your appreciation for the people who helped you on your path.
